Where is Melanesian Training College?
Our campus is at Togoba, on the outskirts of Mt Hagen in Western Highlands Province. See contact for directions, or campus life for what it is like to study here.
Is MTC a recognised institution?
Yes. Melanesian Training College is registered with the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology under DHERST Reg. No. 043. Every qualification we award — on campus or online — is delivered under that registration.
What can I study at MTC?
Six trades at National Certificate Level 1 (with Level 2 in Electrical Fitting, Light Motor Vehicle Mechanic and Diesel Heavy Equipment Fitting), and six business and professional fields from Certificate IV through to Diploma. There is also a growing catalogue of online courses. See all programs.
Do you offer boarding?
Yes. Every trade and business program is offered in both day and boarding mode. Boarding students live on campus at Togoba. See the fees page for the difference in cost.
Are women accepted into the trade programs?
Yes. Our trade workshops are open to women and men alike, and women train in every trade we offer. See trade programs.
Do I need Grade 12 to study at MTC?
Not for every program. Grade 10 leavers may apply for the trade programs (NC1 and NC2) and for the Certificate IV courses. The Diplomas require Grade 12. Non-school leavers are considered on merit and relevant experience.
Can I apply if I have been out of school for years?
Yes. Non-school leavers and working adults are a core part of who MTC serves. If you have work experience in the field you are applying for, say so in your application — it counts.
What is the difference between day, boarding and online?
The course content is identical for day and boarding; day students make their own living arrangements while boarding students live on campus at Togoba. Boarding adds K1,000 on the six-month Certificate IV and NC courses, and K2,000 per year on the two-year Diplomas. Online Training Mode is a separate catalogue of courses delivered through the MTC LMS. See online courses.
How do I pay my fees?
Fees are paid in two instalments — a first instalment to secure your place and a balance payable during the course. Payment details are issued with your offer. See the fees page.
Can my employer or sponsor pay for me?
Yes. Attach a sponsorship or employer letter to your application so the admissions office can invoice the sponsor directly.
How will I know if I have been accepted?
MTC publishes acceptance lists showing each successful applicant’s Offer ID, name and course. Lists are posted to the news page and on our Facebook page.
I am having trouble with the online form. What do I do?
Watch the walkthrough on our YouTube channel. If you are still stuck, call +675 7324 4474 or email mtcdata24@gmail.com.
When is the first instalment due?
On acceptance. Your offer letter states the amount and the deadline. Your place is confirmed once the first instalment is received — an offer left unpaid past the deadline may be released to another applicant.
When is the balance due?
During the course, on the schedule set out in your offer. Results and certificates are released once fees are paid in full.
Can an employer or sponsor be invoiced?
Yes. Attach a sponsorship or employer letter to your application and the admissions office will invoice the sponsor directly. Provincial governments, companies, churches and community organisations all sponsor students at MTC.
How do I make a payment?
Payment methods and account details are issued with your offer letter. If you need them again, contact the admissions office on +675 7324 4474, or email mtcdata24@gmail.com.
Are the published fees current?
These are the fees as supplied by the college for the current schedule, published in full on the fees page. Fees are reviewed periodically — the amount stated in your offer letter is the amount that applies to you.
Is an online qualification the same as an on-campus one?
Yes. Online courses are delivered by Melanesian Training College under the same DHERST Reg. No. 043 as everything we teach at Togoba.
Can I study a trade online?
No. Our six trades are built around workshop practice, so they run day or boarding at Togoba only. Online Training Mode covers a separate catalogue of courses. See the trade programs for the on-campus options.
What do I need to study online?
A device you can work on — a phone will do for most of it, though a laptop or tablet is easier — and internet access reliable enough to download materials and upload your assessments. A working email address and phone number are needed for your portal account.
How much do online courses cost?
Online study is charged per module, on top of a one-off registration fee. The registration fee is K500 and is non-refundable. Each module is K250: a Certificate IV runs to 8 modules, so K2,500 in total including registration, and a Diploma to 16 modules, so K4,500 in total. Your first payment of K750 covers the registration fee and your first module. The trade programs are not offered online. See the online courses page.
I have lost my portal login. What do I do?
Contact the college on +675 7324 4474, or email mtcdata24@gmail.com with your name and Offer ID, and your access will be restored.
